Subject Matter Details

A symbol of feminine strength, Durga is an ancient warrior goddess who first appeared in the Vedas (Hindu scriptures written 2500 years ago).  She is also worshipped as the great mother of the universe who destroys evil.

Durga was created by all the other gods (combining all their strengths into one woman) to kill a buffalo demon that no god was able to defeat. Each god gave Durga their divine weapon and she was able to slay the demon by chopping off his head.

She rides on a lion which is her vahana or vehicle (most major Hindu deities are associated with an animal and in art they are predominantly depicted riding this animal). A symbol of unrivalled power and dominance in the jungle, the lion is the animal personification of Durga.
